What do we publish?

University Press of Mississippi publishes scholarly works and works for the general public, including monographs and edited collections, as well as nonfiction in the humanities. The hallmarks of the Press are African American studies and popular culture studies, with emphasis on subjects such as comics, film, literature, and music. We also publish within the fields of Caribbean studies; folklore; history; and women’s, gender, and sexuality studies; as well as regional titles on Mississippi, Louisiana, and the Gulf South. Please see our current catalog for a better sense of the areas in which we publish. We do not publish fiction or poetry.

The Press regularly works with regional, national, and international museums and institutions in co-publishing and distribution.

Would you like to submit a project for consideration?

We welcome manuscript proposals! Review our staff listing for the editor best suited for your project and be sure to follow our Submission Guidelines. Please write to only one editor and their assistant, and be sure to indicate if you’re interested in submitting your manuscript for consideration in a particular series.

If you are submitting a revised dissertation, review our Guidelines for Dissertation Revision before submission to ensure you’ve done the necessary work.

Has your project been accepted for publication?

Congratulations! It’s time to prepare the manuscript for delivery. In addition to the manuscript itself, there are several other items we require.

Please carefully follow our Manuscript Preparation Guidelines. If the manuscript is not prepared as we have requested, we will return it for the necessary work to be done. This could affect the book’s publication schedule.
